HSK 1 vs HSK 2: Which Level Should You Take?

July 31, 2026 · 5 min read

HSK levels are independent exams — there is no rule that you must pass HSK 1 before booking HSK 2. So the real question is not "which comes first" but "which one matches my current Chinese". Booking too low wastes the exam fee; booking too high wastes it faster. Here is how to pick.

The short answer

  • True beginner (a few weeks to a few months of study): book HSK 1. It is designed to be an achievable first milestone.
  • You can already handle HSK 1 material comfortably — you read 你叫什么名字? or 我现在去上班 without reaching for a dictionary: skip to HSK 2.
  • You need the certificate for something specific(a school program, a job, a visa point): check what level they actually require and book exactly that — most formal requirements start at HSK 3 or 4 anyway, in which case treat 1 and 2 as training milestones, not goals.

What each level actually tests

Both levels are listening + reading only — no writing, no speaking. Every question stays inside the official word list, and both use the same scoring: 200 points maximum, 120 to pass.

HSK 1 — 150 words, 40 questions (20 listening, 20 reading), about 40 minutes. Sentences are short and concrete: names, numbers, family, food, where things are. Recordings play twice and the pace is slow.

HSK 2 — 300 words total (the 150 from HSK 1 plus 150 new ones), 60 questions (35 listening, 25 reading), about 55 minutes. Sentences get longer and start to involve simple reasoning: comparing prices, understanding why someone is late, picking the right response in a short dialogue.

The jump that surprises most learners is not grammar — it is that HSK 2 assumes the HSK 1 words are automatic. If you still pause to recall 因为 or 旁边, those pauses compound across 60 questions.

A 5-minute self-check

Open our HSK 1 vocabulary list and scan it honestly:

  • You recognize under 80% of the words → book HSK 1.
  • You recognize 90%+ and can read them in sentences (not just in isolation) → HSK 2 is realistic with 4–8 weeks of preparation.
  • Somewhere in between → take one free HSK 1 mock exam. Below 140, book HSK 1; above, start aiming at HSK 2.

Can you skip HSK 1 entirely?

Yes, and many learners do — the exams share the same format, so HSK 2 preparation covers everything HSK 1 would have tested. The one good reason to take HSK 1 first is motivational, not academic: a passed exam on the wall is real momentum, and at this level the exam fee is modest. If a guaranteed early win keeps you studying, that is worth more than the fee.

What about the speaking test (HSKK)?

HSKK is a separate exam you book independently. Nothing requires it at levels 1–2 — most beginner candidates skip it. If your goal does involve speaking certification, the beginner HSKK pairs naturally with HSK 1–2 vocabulary, so you can prepare for both from the same word lists.

Decide with data, not vibes

The fastest way to settle this: take one free timed mock exam at each level on HSK Prep. Score HSK 1 comfortably above the 120 pass line (140+)? Register for HSK 2 and put the next 4–8 weeks into its 150 new words — our HSK 2 study guide has the week-by-week plan. Score under 140? HSK 1 is your exam, and the gap tells you exactly what to fix.
