HSK passing score: how scoring works
Last reviewed 21 October 2026 · Applies to the current exam format until 13 December 2026
The pass marks
Each section is scored out of 100. HSK 1 and 2 have two sections, so the total is 200 and the pass mark is 120. HSK 3–6 add a writing section, for a total of 300 and a pass mark of 180 — exactly 60% in both cases.
| Level | Sections | Total | Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | Listening, Reading | 200 | 120 |
| HSK 2 | Listening, Reading | 200 | 120 |
| HSK 3 | Listening, Reading, Writing | 300 | 180 |
| HSK 4 | Listening, Reading, Writing | 300 | 180 |
| HSK 5 | Listening, Reading, Writing | 300 | 180 |
| HSK 6 | Listening, Reading, Writing | 300 | 180 |
Is there a minimum per section?
For HSK 1 and 2 there is no per-section minimum: a strong listening score can carry a weaker reading score. The overall 120 is what counts, which is why candidates are advised to answer every question — there is no negative marking.
When do results come out?
Results are released online after the test, typically within a few weeks; the official score report is then issued. Computer-based tests often return scores faster than paper tests. Check the announcement for your specific test date on chinesetest.cn.
How long is the certificate valid?
HSK certificates are valid for two years from the test date. That applies to certificates earned under the current format as well: HSK 3.0 launching on 13 December 2026 does not invalidate a certificate you already hold.
What counts as a good score?
Anything above the pass mark is a pass, but two thresholds matter in practice: universities and employers often ask for HSK 4 or 5, and a score well above the minimum (150+/200 at HSK 2, 220+/300 at HSK 3) signals solid recognition rather than a lucky pass. If you are close to the line, take another timed mock before booking.

Frequently asked questions
What is the passing score for HSK 1 and HSK 2?
120 out of 200. Both levels have listening and reading sections worth 100 points each, and there is no per-section minimum.
What is the passing score for HSK 3 to HSK 6?
180 out of 300. These levels add a writing section, so each of the three sections is worth 100 points.
Do you fail if one section is below 60?
At HSK 1 and 2 there is no section minimum — only the 120 total matters. At HSK 3–6 the same applies to the total of 180, so a weak section can be offset by a strong one.
How long are HSK results valid?
Certificates are valid for two years from the test date, including certificates earned under the current format before HSK 3.0 launches.
