Searching for "HSK exam dates 2026" returns a confusing mix of old PDFs and third-party calendars — because there is no single worldwide exam day. The HSK runs on a global yearly schedule, but each test center chooses which sessions and formats it actually offers. Here is how the schedule really works, and how to find the dates that apply to you.
How the HSK schedule works
Chinese Testing International (CTI), the organization behind the HSK, publishes an official calendar of test sessions once a year on chinesetest.cn, the only official registration portal. The 2026 calendar has 11 sessions for HSK 1–6 — roughly one per month, with no session in February. Every session is offered in both paper-based and computer-based formats.
But the calendar is a menu, not a guarantee. The HSK runs at around 1,400 test centers in more than 200 countries, and each center opts into the sessions it can staff. A large center in a big city may run almost every session; a smaller one may offer only a few dates a year, sometimes paper-only. So the real question is never "when is the HSK?" but "when is the HSK at my center?"
Where to find your center's dates
Go to chinesetest.cn and use the test-date search: filter by exam level, your country or city, and format (paper-based or computer-based). The results show exactly which sessions your local centers have opened for registration, with their deadlines. Many centers — usually universities and language institutes — also publish their own schedules, but treat chinesetest.cn as the source of truth: if a date is not open there, you cannot book it.
How registration works, step by step
Registration happens entirely on chinesetest.cn:
- Create an account with your email — one account per email address.
- Book a test: choose the exam type (HSK), your level, the format, a date, and then a test center.
- Fill in your details and upload a recent ID-style photo (JPG, light background). Get this right — the photo goes on your admission ticket and score report.
- Pay the fee.Overseas candidates pay by the method the local center specifies, so check your center's instructions; fees vary by country.
- Print your admission ticket from your account, usually available 5–7 days before the exam.
Deadlines: how far in advance to book
Registration closes well before exam day, and the deadline depends on the format. Based on the official 2026 schedule:
Paper-based— registration closes about four weeks (roughly 27 days) before the exam.Computer-based— registration closes 10 days before the exam.
Treat those as the latest possible moment, not the target. Popular centers fill up, and photo or payment problems can cost you days. If you have a fixed deadline — a university application, a visa — book at least one to two months ahead.
Paper-based vs computer-based
The questions, timing and scoring are identical; only the answer method and the results speed differ. Paper-based scores are released about one month after the exam; computer-based written scores come out in about 15 days. At HSK 1 and 2 everything is multiple choice, so there is no handwriting advantage either way — pick by which date and results speed fits your plan. A computer-based "at home" edition also exists, but its sessions are announced separately and were not part of the annual 2026 calendar, so do not count on it for planning.
What about HSK 3.0 in 2026?
You may see HSK 3.0 pilot exams in the date listings — like the global pilot held in January 2026 at selected centers. Pilots are labeled separately, and CTI has stated that regular 2026 sessions still run the current 2.0 format, with the full 3.0 rollout to be announced. Back-plan from your target date
Work backwards from when you need the certificate, not forwards from today:
- Results buffer: 15 days (computer) or one month (paper) after the exam before you have a score.
- Retake buffer: ideally one extra session in case the first attempt goes wrong — at monthly frequency that is about one month.
- Prep time: depends on your starting point — see how long HSK 1 preparation takes.
Example: you need an HSK 1 score report by the end of October. Taking the computer-based exam in September gives you results in 15 days — but no room for a retake. Sitting it in August does, and starting prep in June or July fits a typical 4–8 week plan. Mark it like a study goal:
