Type "HSK practice test online free" into a search engine and you get a wall of PDFs, quiz pages and apps of wildly uneven quality. Some are genuinely useful; many will quietly train you for an exam that does not exist. Here is what a realistic free mock must have — and how to use one so it actually raises your score.
What a real HSK mock must match
The HSK is a fixed-format exam, so a good practice test is easy to audit. For the two beginner levels:
HSK 1— 40 questions in 40 minutes: 20 listening and 20 reading, all multiple choice.HSK 2— 60 questions in about 55 minutes: 35 listening and 25 reading.- Listening recordings play twice each — a mock that plays them once is harder than the real exam.
- Each level is scored out of 200, with
120 to pass(100 per section), and no penalty for wrong answers.
If a "practice test" cannot tell you its question counts, timing and scoring, it is a quiz, not a mock.
Audio is half the exam
Listening is 50% of your score at HSK 1 and 2, yet this is exactly where most free tests fall apart. A reading-only "mock" tests half an exam. The audio also has to be real: clear recordings of natural-speed native speech, played twice, with the actual question types — picture matching, true/false judgments, short dialogues. A typical dialogue sounds like this:
我今天下午三点有考试。I have an exam at 3 p.m. today. (Now imagine answering a question about the time — with no transcript.)

Vocabulary must stay on the syllabus
The real exam only uses words from the official lists — 150 words for HSK 1, 300 for HSK 2. That constraint is your biggest advantage as a learner, and the first thing careless practice tests break. Questions stuffed with off-list words feel "harder and more serious", but all they train is guessing. Check a few questions against the HSK 1 vocabulary list or HSK 2 vocabulary list — a well-built mock stays inside them completely.
Common shortcomings of free tests online
Wrong format
Random question counts, no timer, fill-in-the-blank or translation tasks the real exam never asks. The HSK 1–2 is 100% multiple choice.
No audio, or single-play audio
As above — this removes half the exam or makes it harder than the real thing.
No scoring by section
A single percentage tells you nothing actionable. You need listening and reading scored separately out of 100 each, because a weak section changes what you study next week.
Outdated exams
Old sample papers circulate for years. The current format is what runs on regular 2026 dates — pilots of the next version are labeled separately (see what HSK 3.0 changes).
How to use a practice test properly
- Take it timed, in one sitting. No pausing the audio, no dictionary. You are training exam stamina, not just knowledge.
- Review every wrong answer the same day. Write down why the correct option is correct — a word you missed, a trap, a misread question.
- Re-do the listening questions you missed without the transcript first, then check where you lost the thread.
- Use scores as a readiness signal: when you hit 140+ (out of 200) twice in a row under real timing, you are ready to book.
